JFK is the most balkanized major US airport, where each terminal is essentially run by a different airline alliance with its own rules, lounges, and security culture. Terminal 4 (Delta + SkyTeam international) is enormous and modern. Terminal 1 (Air France/Lufthansa/others) is older and tighter. Terminal 7 (British Airways/Iberia) is on borrowed time, with most operations migrating to Terminal 8 (American/oneworld) over the next year.

What this means in practice: the 'best' time to fly out of JFK depends entirely on which terminal you're using. Terminal 5 (JetBlue) is a fundamentally calmer experience than Terminal 4 at the same hour. If you have flexibility between airlines (e.g. a transatlantic that connects via either), checking the terminal-specific schedule can shave 30 minutes off your day.

JFK has the most pronounced 'late-evening international wave' of any US airport. Between 7-10 PM, the entire airport surges as 60+ wide-body departures push off the gates for Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. TSA at Terminal 1 and Terminal 4 can hit 45-minute waits during this window even on a Tuesday. If you're flying domestic during this evening peak, expect ripple effects: ride-share pickup gets congested, AirTrain platforms get full, and even the terminal restaurants get slammed.

Counter-intuitively, the easiest JFK departure is often the 11 AM – 2 PM mid-day domestic window, especially out of Terminal 5 (JetBlue) or Terminal 8 (American). The morning business rush has cleared, the evening international wave hasn't built yet, and you can move through security in 10 minutes flat.
