Atlanta is the only US airport where you can fly to nearly every domestic destination nonstop, and that's not by accident. Delta has spent four decades building ATL into a hub-and-spoke machine: roughly 80% of departures here are Delta or a Delta partner, and most non-Atlantans you'll meet in the terminal are actually connecting. That means peak periods compress brutally — a wave of 30+ regional jets all arrive between 4:45–5:15 PM to feed the evening transcons, and every checkpoint feels it.

If you live in Atlanta and have flexibility, the data is clear: aim for the 5–7 PM window. After the 4 PM connection rush burns off, departure volume drops 20-30% even though the airport still has plenty of options. The 6-8 AM 'business rush' is overrated for crowds — many of those flights are local boarding for hub-and-spoke connections, not heavy TSA passenger volume.

The South security checkpoint consistently moves faster than North, mostly because it serves Delta's main concourse traffic where TSA PreCheck adoption is highest. If you're flying out of a non-Delta carrier on Concourse C or D, walking the extra 5 minutes to the South checkpoint will save you 10-15 minutes in line on a high-traffic day.

One ATL-specific tip you won't find on the airport's official site: the Plane Train (the underground people-mover) has a quirk where Concourse T traffic spikes between 6:30-7:00 AM when most Atlanta-based Delta crews are positioning. If you can time your security exit before 6:30, you'll find Concourse T noticeably easier to navigate.
