O'Hare is a weather-amplifier airport. A single Chicago thunderstorm cell can turn a normal Wednesday afternoon into a five-hour cascade of ripple delays, because ORD's inbound waves are packed tightly enough that any hour of ground-stop pushes traffic into the next hour, and the next. Departure crowds don't just come from your own flight — they come from every stuck arrival whose connecting passengers are now overrunning your terminal.

Terminal 1 (United's stronghold, Concourses B and C) is a different building from Terminal 3 (American's main). Terminal 2 has been mid-renovation for what feels like a decade and handles a mix of United regional traffic. If you're flying American mainline, T3 security-checkpoint 5 (South) is meaningfully faster than checkpoint 7 (North) during morning peaks because it feeds more PreCheck-heavy business travelers.

The 6:30-8:30 AM push at ORD is the real crush — this is where Chicago's business travelers, plus the first arriving connection wave, plus the international overnight arrivals all hit at once. If you can catch a flight before 6:30 AM or after 9:30 AM, you'll walk through TSA in half the time.

The under-used ORD hack: the Blue Line CTA train from downtown. It's $5, runs 24/7, and dumps you directly into the pedestrian tunnel under Terminal 2 — no shuttle bus, no rental-car center detour. During rush hour it beats every Lyft in the city, and unlike I-90, it can't get stuck in traffic.
