Here's the secret most travelers miss: TBIT's security is among the calmest at LAX during daytime hours, because the bulk of international departures happen between 8:30 PM and 1 AM. From 9 AM – 4 PM, TBIT security can be 5-10 minutes faster than the domestic terminals. If you have international status and are connecting, this is a free upgrade in stress.

The 4-7 PM block at Terminal 5 (Delta) and Terminal 4 (American) is genuinely brutal. Plan accordingly: leave the rental return building 30 minutes earlier than you think. The LAX-it shuttle for ride-shares has dramatically improved curbside chaos, but it can add 15-25 minutes during peak — never an excuse to skip, since the alternative is sitting in the Sepulveda Boulevard ring of doom.

Pro move: Terminal 1 (Southwest) sees its biggest crush at 6-8 AM and again at 5-7 PM, but the 11 AM – 1 PM window is often surprisingly quiet because most leisure Southwest passengers prefer morning departures. If you're flexible, mid-day Southwest out of LAX is the easiest TSA experience in the entire horseshoe.
