When it works, CLT is one of the most efficient connection experiences in the US. When it doesn't, the terminal has almost no expansion room to absorb the delay.
American runs three big connection banks at CLT: mid-morning (roughly 10-11 AM), mid-afternoon (2-3 PM), and evening (6-7 PM). Between the banks, the terminal feels almost sleepy. If you're an origin passenger (not connecting) and can time your departure between banks, security is remarkably calm.
The atrium-and-rocking-chairs Great Hall is genuinely one of the most pleasant airside spaces at any US hub — but it also becomes the choke point during peak connection banks because everyone traverses it. Concourse E (regional jets to smaller markets) gets particularly congested when a rain delay in Charlotte cancels 10+ RJ departures at once. If weather is iffy, avoid connections to E.
