BOS

Boston Logan International Airport

Boston, MA

FAA delays now — avg 53 min

Boston Logan is New England's dominant airport, serving over 40 million passengers a year just four miles from downtown Boston. It's a JetBlue focus city and Delta hub with a fast-growing transatlantic schedule. Logan's four terminals sit on a compact loop, and its public transit story is unusually good for a US airport — the free Silver Line bus runs straight to South Station downtown.

Insider analysis

Boston is small for a major hub — and that's both its charm and its curse

Logan is compact by hub standards, which means terminal walks are short and connections are pleasant, but it also means there's very little buffer capacity when things go wrong. A single nor'easter can strand traffic for a full day because there's nowhere to spill overflow flights. Winter travel from Boston has genuine weather risk in a way that Atlanta or Dallas simply doesn't.

Terminal B (JetBlue's main terminal) and Terminal E (international) are the busiest and most likely to have TSA waits worth planning around. Terminal A (Delta) and Terminal C (mixed carriers including United and Alaska) are noticeably calmer even at peak hours. If your itinerary lets you choose between JetBlue and a different domestic carrier, the non-JetBlue terminals are the easier security experience.

Logan has a strong regional-airline presence (Cape Air, JetBlue Connect, etc.) that adds a wave of small-aircraft departures nobody else has. These flights don't produce big TSA crowds, but they do use up gates aggressively — so if you're on a mainline flight, expect gate assignments to be later and more variable than at other hubs.

The Silver Line bus from South Station is criminally under-used. It's the only major US airport where the transit connection is a bus (not a train), but it runs in a bus-only lane through the Ted Williams Tunnel — so it's actually faster than a taxi during Boston rush hour, and it's free from the airport back to the city.

Insider tip

Terminal E's Legal Sea Foods is the airport meal that Bostonians actually stand behind. If you're on an international departure with a long layover, a bowl of clam chowder there is a legitimate reason to arrive an hour earlier than you need to.
