MCO

Orlando International Airport

Orlando, FL

No FAA delays right now

MCO is the gateway to Central Florida's world-famous theme parks, including Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and SeaWorld. The airport recently opened the new Terminal C, the first major terminal built in the US in 25 years, featuring automated people movers and state-of-the-art technology.

Insider analysis

Orlando runs on family vacation rhythm, which changes the security math

MCO is unique among major US hubs in that its dominant traveler segment is not business commuters — it's families and leisure groups arriving for Disney, Universal, cruise ports, and conferences. That produces a set of crowd patterns you don't see at ATL or DFW: Saturday morning is nearly as busy as a weekday, and mid-week evenings can be surprisingly quiet.

The airport is organized around a central Terminal complex (Terminal A + Terminal B, connected on the ground and airside) with a newer, separate Terminal C serving Southwest, JetBlue, and international carriers. Terminal C's security is materially calmer than the older A/B checkpoints during peak weekend windows — if your carrier operates from Terminal C, that's a small quality-of-life upgrade you didn't ask for.

MCO's peak isn't a single wave — it's two: 5-8 AM (families heading home from vacation) and 4-7 PM (return-flight cluster driven by Disney park-close timing). If you can fly between 10 AM and 2 PM on any day, MCO becomes one of the easier major-hub experiences you'll have. The families are still at the theme parks.

Brightline higher-speed rail now connects MCO directly to Miami (about 3 hours) and stations in between. It's an under-used option for travelers doing a Florida circuit — dramatically less painful than driving I-4 or booking a connecting flight, and the MCO Brightline station is inside the Terminal C complex, no rental car required.

Insider tip

The best-kept MCO food secret is the Cask & Larder Southern Kitchen in the A-side atrium — genuinely good Florida cooking, not airport-food-court quality. It's easy to miss because the signage is understated compared to the chains around it.
