Sky Harbor is one of the more efficiently laid-out major US airports — three terminals, arranged linearly, connected by the free PHX Sky Train. Security is generally quick. What outsiders miss is that summer heat (June through mid-September) fundamentally changes the departure calculus here. When temperatures push past 118°F, some aircraft literally can't take off at maximum weight, and afternoon departures get downgauged, delayed, or occasionally rebooked to overnight.
The practical consequence: summer afternoon flights from Phoenix are genuinely riskier for delays than winter or morning flights. Frequent PHX flyers instinctively book departures before 11 AM or after 8 PM during high-heat months. If you're stuck with an afternoon summer departure, plan the day around the airport, not around the fun — leave for PHX earlier than you would in any other US city.
Terminal 4 (American, Southwest, and international) is the largest and busiest. Terminal 3 (Delta, United, Alaska) is a completely different building and feels dramatically less crowded even during peak hours. If you're flying Delta or United, PHX is one of the calmer non-hub experiences at any Southwest US airport.
The PHX Sky Train connects the terminals to the East Economy parking and — critically — to the 44th Street/Washington light rail stop, which puts you on Valley Metro's route into central Phoenix. That transit combination is under-used but faster than a taxi during rush hour, and reliable in a way that Phoenix ride-share isn't always during major convention weeks.
